RV Rental Guide

When considering your next RV rental, you will want to keep some key points in mind. For the most part, renting a larger RV unit will provide you with more privacy, comfort, and overall space.

Florida RV RentalWhile this may sound simple, you willwant to give some thought to exactly how much privacy, comfort, and space you and your traveling guest will want. For example, traveling with your own family on a summer vacation camp out requires different privacy when sleeping than does renting an RV for a tailgating party with your neighbors.

Privacy while sleeping is an especially important consideration. Make sure you seriously consider your needs and desires before making your RV rental selection. Renting an RV that is larger than what you need means you will be paying extra for the rental as well as the gas.

While some units will claim they sleep a certain number of people, you will want to be wary of some of these claims. Some of the ‘people’ they refer to may not be adults. Typically, adults will want to have a full 6 feet of length for sleeping comfort.

What size of RV is best for my next RV rental?

The types of RVs available for rent fall into the categories below:

Motorhome

The typical motorhome is built on self-propelled chassis measuring 24-40 feet long. It usually contains sleeping quarters for 2-7 people, bathroom facilities, kitchen and dining areas, and access to the driver’s area. These rigs have systems like electricity, propane gas, heating and air conditioning, and water. While these systems are self-contained while on the road, users will hook up while at camp grounds to water, sewer, electricity, and even cable television and Internet connections.

Mini Motorhomes

A mini motorhome ranges from 20-28 feet long and can be considered a scaled down version of a motorhome. They are built on a truck chassis, sleep 2 to 6 people, though that would include children, not full-grown adults, and features the sleeping bunks on top of the cab, a feature you would likely recognize. The living area, while also accessible to the driver’s area, will be smaller with less privacy and will have fewer features than the full motorhome will have. Benefits, however, are that the mini motorhome is easier to drive on the road, easier to park, and is more economical to operate.

Van Conversions

A van conversion RV would be a standard van size, anywhere from about 16-21 feet long with a raised roof. These units may include some customizations that would include windows on the side, carpeting, some type of minimal kitchen and/or toilet facilities, and may sleep 2 to 4 people.

Travel Trailers

Travel trailers are towable units that can be anywhere from 13 to 33 feet long and require heavy-duty vehicles to pull them. Because of the large living space, they usually have full facilities like kitchens, bathrooms, etc., but there is not access to the driver’s space while moving. In fact, it is illegal to use them while being towed. Travel trailers are ideal when parking at campgrounds for an extended period of time when you can use the tow vehicle as your local transportation as well.

Folding Camping Trailer

One of the more common sites in campgrounds, these towable trailers collapse when moving buy expand to as much as 15-23 feet when fully set up. Cleverly designed, they often have kitchen and dining areas and can sleep as many as 8. Keep in mind you will need to have showering and toilet facilities provided by the campground where you are planning on staying.

Where can I rent RVs?

There are a number of companies that provide RV rentals. While a few can handle nationwide rentals, many more operate within certain regions. Depending on your travel plans, this may determine who you use. For example, if you are planning on renting your RV for a local getaway, a regional dealer would work just fine. However, if you are planning on a cross-country trip (a bold move for a new RVer), then you would like a national dealer who can provide nationwide support and resources for your entire trip. In some cases, you may want a one-way rental and not all dealers offer that option, so be sure to match the capabilities of the dealer with the nature of your plans.

How much does it cost?

RV rental dealers usually charge a daily rental fee plus a mileage charge. So, it is important to have a good idea about how you are going to use your RV during your rental period. If you are going to stay relatively local and not drive too much during your trip, the mileage charge won't be as important. On the other hand, if you plan on logging a log of miles, then the mileage charges can quickly add up. Also, be sure you know what other usage fees might be incurred. For instance, if you are not staying in an RV park with electrical hookups and therefore plan on using the generator, you may incur charges on generator usage. The good news is that most quality RV rental dealers are up front and clear about their charges. Like most things, if you are uncomfortable with what you are being told and feel like the dealer is being deceptive, find another dealer. There are plenty of good choices out there.

Does it require a large deposit?

In most cases, you will be required to put down a deposit. How much of a deposit depends on the type of RV rented and the terms of your trip.

What type of RV should I rent?

That will depend entirely on what you plan on doing, how many people you will have, and where you travel. If you are not familiar with the different types of RVs, you will want to call the dealer and discuss the types of RVs they have available and they should be able to help you match the right RV with your travel plans.

Do I need a special license to rent an RV?

No. In nearly all cases, you just need a valid driver's license.

Do the RVs come equipped with supplies and equipment (such as dishes, pots and pans, etc.)?

In most cases, no. You will need to bring those supplies with you. Some dealers offer add-on packages where you can have the RV stocked with different types of items, so be sure to ask your dealer when you first inquire about your RV rental.

What if the RV breaks down during the trip?

Most dealers provide some type of an assistance hotline that you can call in the case of mechanical problems.

How do I learn about how to operate all the systems within the RV?

In most cases, the staff of the dealer where you rent your RV will provide you with an orientation of the RV itself. They will review safe operation of the vehicle, how to operate the internal systems and equipment, how to hook up with electric, water, etc. Remember, it is in their best interest to make sure you are ready to safely operate the RV and enjoy all of the features. A happy and satisfied customer will return for future rentals.

What happens if there is an accident with the RV?

Be sure to check the policies and procedures of the dealer for handling accidents. In most cases, you will need to notify the dealer within 24 hours and be sure to keep all of the necessary paperwork, especially any police reports.
